Microsoft Remote Desktop Beta Latest Version

In the beginning of June 2017, Microsoft released an update to their Microsoft Remote Desktop client for Mac (version 8.0.40) which breaks the functionality. We advise our users to not update to this version, and remain on the 8.0.39 or older for a functional client. There’s no need to bother upgrading macOS when all you want to do is RDP to another computer. While the old Remote Desktop 8 (which is compatible with older macOS versions) is no longer available on the Mac App Store or direct from Microsoft, you can still download it direct from macsx 100% malware-free — just check out this article.

Last week Microsoft released the first update for the Remote Desktop Client for iOS in a year. Soon after, Microsoft quickly pulled it with no explanation.

First spotted by Microsoft enthusiast Tero Alhonen last Thursday, the Remote Desktop Client for iOS version 10.0.0 was released with numerous new features and fixes. This includes Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) support, improved external keyboard support, dark and light themes, a new UI, and more.

The full change log can be seen below with assurances from Microsoft that they plan on releasing more frequent updates going forward.

It’s been well over a year since we last updated the Remote Desktop Client for iOS. However, we are back in the game with an exciting update, with many more to follow at a regular cadence from here on out. Here’s what new in this release:

  • Support for the Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) service.
  • Brand new Connection Center UI.
  • Brand new in-session UI for switching between connected PCs and apps.
  • New layout for the auxiliary on-screen keyboard.
  • Improved external keyboard support.
  • Support for SwiftPoint Bluetooth mice.
  • Support for microphone redirection.
  • Support for local storage redirection.
  • Support for camera redirection (Windows 10 1809 or later required).
  • Support for new iPhone and iPad devices.
  • Dark and light theme support.
  • Control whether your phone can lock when connected to a remote PC or app.
  • Collapse the in-session connection bar with a long-press on the Remote Desktop logo.

We’re committed to making this app the best Remote Desktop client for iOS and value your feedback. If you encounter any errors, you can contact us via Settings > Report an Issue.

Remote Desktop Client v10.0.0 quickly pulled

Very soon after it was released, though, Microsoft suddenly pulled the app from Apple's App Store without any explanation.

From tests conducted by BleepingComputer, the app was pulled from the store in all regions, including the U.S., Germany, Japan, Australia, the UK, and others.

For it to be pulled so quickly, something must have been discovered that was or could cause major problems.

The only reported issue with this new version that BleepingComputer could find was a support topic created on Microsoft TechNet forums by a user from Japan. The user stated that a Japanese input problem still exists and with this release, third-party software keyboards no longer work.

'AND make matters worse, we cannot use 3rd party's software keyboard (for example Gboard by google) on this app(Remote Desktop) since updated to ver. 10.0.0.'

Another user from China posted to the same support topic about similar input bugs.

'Chinese user here! We can’t input Chinese with input methods on iPad directly too. To input Chinese, we can only use input methods on PC.'

BleepingComputer has reached out to Microsoft with questions as to why they pulled the app, but have not heard back as of yet.
